What is Mary’s Sword?

The title of this website has several layers of meaning. The first and most important reference is to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her conversation with Simeon.

Luke 2:34-35: “Then Simeon blessed them and This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (TNIV 1995)

The Sword Divides Between Believers and Skeptics

The crucifixion of Jesus illustrated “the falling and rising of many.” The thief on one side believed, the other did not (Luke 23:39). His disciples and his family were divided (John 7:1-4). In John 6:59-61: “From that time many of his disciples went back and walked with him no more.” Jesus then turned to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go?”

Luke 12:49-54: “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? From now on, there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.” Not only friends and families are divided, but states and the country.

The Sword Pierces Mary’s Heart

It is hard to interpret what this means, but certainly, Mary’s heart was almost fatally struck witnessing her son’s death.

Anna, the Prophet

Anna, as a prophet, is also an important point on my website. She was an elderly widow, like the audience I am reaching, but also serving a role often denied women: she spoke about the child to all. She spread the gospel. No one hindered her.

Luke 2:34: “There was also a prophet, Anna . . . Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

My Prayer

On the day of Jesus’ dedication, Simeon warned Mary that the earthly life of her newborn son would be sorrowful. Her child would bring division. Mary would also not escape this division. Years later, this division occurs in our country and our own families. People are divided as never before. My writing attempts, partially at best, to reveal that sword and heal the wounds. My prayer for this website is to describe this division and offer healing.
